School Readiness & Transitions

Many significant transitions happen for children between birth and 12 years of age. These include transitions into childcare, pre-school, primary school, new grades and secondary school.  For some children, educational transitions are associated with anxiety, uncertainty, and confusion.

At Sound Connections we offer specialised support tailored to different stages of transition. We can help children to build the skills necessary for successful participation in school.

Depending on the stage we may focus on:

  • Listening and following instructions
  • Understanding rules and routines
  • Joining and being part of group
  • Friendship and getting along with others
  • Attention and concentration
  • Planning and performing tasks
  • Organisational skills
  • Reading and writing skills

Helping children transition throughout the day is also an important part of helping them feel calm and in control. Children with communication disorders may also have autism spectrum disorder, ADHD or sensory processing disorder, making transitions especially difficult. We can work with parents, children, and staff to provide strategies that help make daily transitions less stressful for children.
